Dr. John Hamer
Everyday Star

John Hamer, MD combines his scientific and medical abilities with his intense commitment to serve others.  He is a physician of “ability and conviction”.  Along with his wife Esther, a nurse, John has served thousands of patients in Fort Wayne.  Together they also served as medical missionaries in Nigeria where they faced one of the biggest mysteries and challenges of their lives.  When their senior nurse suddenly became deathly ill, they cared for her. She died several days later.

Dr. Hamer’s curiosity about what had happened to their nurse led him to discover “Lassa Fever”, one of the deadliest viruses in the world.  Miraculously, neither he nor his wife contracted the disease even after days of hands-on attention to their nurse.  Actual diagnosis of the disease was extremely complex, and the autopsy that Dr. Hamer was allowed to conduct provided critical evidence for scientists in the U.S. and around the world to confirm the disease.

Since returning to the U.S. in 1969 and caring for his own patients in Indiana, he has also made rounds at Parkview, visiting friends and church members who were patients.  One of those people recalls asking Dr. Hamer to “translate” what the specialist had told him earlier because he is such an excellent listener and translator of technical information.

Even in retirement, John Hamer has continued to work countless hours to help people understand their illnesses and move toward health in their bodies, minds, and souls.
