“Spirit of Generosity” – “Friend of Education”

These are just two phrases that describe this kind, gentle, honest man who touched so many lives in the Fort Wayne community.   He was a businessman who looked out for others; a philanthropist who took care of his community; and a visionary who saw the future in providing education opportunities for tomorrow’s leaders by investing in the universities of today.  After 38 years of service in the banking industry, Doermer retired in 1994 as Chief Executive of Summcorp and the Fort Wayne region of NBD Bank.

“Making Ripples”

This art work is dedicated to Doermer for his ability to make “ripples.”  Doermer made ripples in our community as a “Leader in Philanthropy.”   Through his support of education, each life touched by his generosity ripples to touch others through the knowledge gained and the improvement of our community.  He believed people deserved the opportunity to obtain education if desired; an opportunity to improve life; and an opportunity to make a difference.  It was through his generosity that universities were able to enhance educational programs and campus sites.  In 1999, the University of Notre Dame opened the Doermer Family M.B.A. Career Development Center.  In 2000, the University of Saint Francis opened the Doermer Family Center for Health Science Education. In 2006, IPFW renamed its business school the Richard T. Doermer School of Business and Management Services.  Our community will continue to reap the awards of Doermer’s ability to “make ripples” through his generosity and commitment to education for many decades to come.
