“He who plants a tree, plants a hope.”  Lucy Larcom, 1824-1893, Poet

In 1991, driven by a passion for nature and a need to make a difference, Mark Ringenberg founded Hoosier ReLeaf, a nonprofit education and action organization.  An official member agency of Global ReLeaf, this local group conducts tree-planting projects and environmental education programs throughout Indiana with its primary focus in Allen County.  Dedicated to improving both urban and rural environments, trees are made available to schools, parks, churches, and other nonprofit organizations at no charge.  Hoosier ReLeaf has planted thousands of trees in collaborative service projects with organizations such as Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation, Habitat for Humanity, the Home Builders Association, Purdue Extension, Acres, Indianapolis Power & Light, the City of Grabill, the Boy Scouts, and numerous schools and churches.

But Mark wanted to do more than plant trees…he wanted people to understand how important it is to reforest our local communities.  He (along with a group of dedicated volunteers) works with teachers, scout troops, community and neighborhood action groups to educate citizens on tree identification, planting, pruning, composting, and the importance of healthy trees to a community infrastructure.
Of course I used trees to depict Mark’s efforts, and in the background you see buildings which represent urban communities.  Can you imagine a city without trees?  How stark and uninviting…not livable.  Trees improve air quality, reduce noise, cool urban areas…we cannot afford to take this natural resource for granted.

Mark’s good-natured fervor for trees is contagious!  His enthusiasm and hard work are the impetus behind Hoosier ReLeaf…it pulls you in and makes you want to be a tree-hugger!  Mark has what seems to be boundless energy for his cause, a strong commitment to community, and a selfless, genuine desire to do his part.
