Kate's Kart

Shortly after Katherine Ann Layman’s birth in June 2006, she was diagnosed with a serious heart condition.  During her frequent hospital stays and multiple surgeries, Baby Kate loved to look at books and have people read to her.  Her parents, Krista and Andrew, couldn’t help but notice how comforting the books were for Kate.  After Kate passed away on January 15, 2008, Krista and Andrew wanted to do something in memory of their daughter…they founded “Kate’s Kart”, a non-profit organization that distributes books to pediatric patients.  Since the very first book cart started rolling around hospital hallways, “Kate’s Kart” has given thousands of books to children in hospitals.  As of May 2011 over 30,000 books have been distributed by 90+ volunteers serving 14 area hospitals.  These books give young patients a much needed escape from the pain, medications, tests, and somewhat scary hospital experience.  The Layman’s are wonderful people…parents with big hearts who have turned a tragic loss into a spectacular way to comfort others and keep Baby Kate’s memory alive.
